Tackling Middle East Misinformation on Social Media Is Like Playing Whack-A-Mole, Says Expert Dr. Arun Vishwanath

As tensions continue to flare between Israelis and Palestinians, social media appears to be fanning the flames of the conflict and an uptick in antisemitic hate crimes through the spread of misinformation. Cybersecurity expert Dr. Arun Vishwanath talked to Cheddar about how platforms have a responsibility to tackle the issue but admits that moderation is difficult because of the volume of content that needs to be assessed. While calling it “a game of whack-a-mole,” he called on platforms to prioritize amplifying real news stories and block accounts that promote fake news and added that the audiences receiving misinformation and disinformation also have to do a better job.
